Ode to the Pustuled Masses, Especially South Detroit

poetry

I have made the mistake
and read too far in to you junkies
and you perverts and you wasted
shells with epithets aplenty adorning
your maladjusted beings.

I can not know the things you’ve seen
because I can not know how you’ve
seen them, Rose-colored glasses or
beer goggles or haze or whathaveyou.

But, however you find your beauty from
day to day, it’s always a hard smile
with your teeth so rotted that way.

    Listen.

If you’re not doing your best, or your best is not good enough, in the end, haven’t you become fail?

And when you embrace this, and your teeth have rotted away from the years of the sugar and the crack-kekcaine and the amphetamines or whatever your vice may be; haven’t you become the devil?

And when you breed your fat children, that walk around in a retarded haze, aren’t you a virus?

At a certain point, don’t you think, that it’s impossible to empathize with someone? Should one empathize with everyone? Even the robbers and the thieves? Even the drug lords in Africa that rape and pillage?

Shouldn’t, and correct me if I’m wrong, shouldn’t these people be killed in the name of goodness? Or is the name of goodness the one about being spineless and loving even that which does not deserve it?

Have the apologists and the spineless and the confused made setting a bar for humanity seem evil in itself, in the name of unfairness?

Are these empty shells helpless children? Or beasts?

Hugo I somewhat disagree, but I am not sure why. Does anybody expect us  to empathize with evil? But then again asking a question does not mean that you are necessarily formulating an opinion. You may simply be pondering on issues. However,  the very idea of setting a bar for humanity bothers me a bit, for once lofty ideals of what a good human being is have been set only sordid inhumanity ensues with inquisitors persecuting perceived heathens, hereticts, savages and marginals for the greater good. Before you know it, some lunatic can berate you for eating a cookie on a side street and then appear on Oprah crying furiously about how he/she has overcome the trauma of your vile existence and lack of propriety “he ate a cookie in a public space!”

I enjoy reading your piece, and I think it’s time they* start improving them drugs, add in some fluoride, baking soda or something and give junkies a shot at whiter healthier teeth.
