if you give a man independence

poetry

if you give a man independence
he’s going to buy a motorcycle
he’ll cruise the world for days
perhaps months
then he’s going to want someone
to share it with

if you give a man a woman
he’ll take her with him and they’ll
build shared experience in some of the
craziest places on earth
then he’ll fall in love with her

if you give a man a wife
they’ll fall more in love
and soon they’ll want someone
to make their love a family
and they’ll begin to think about little
ones

if you give a man a child
he’ll ball his eyes out at first
glimpse of the miracle he helped
to produce and love it watch it grow
until it can run around and eat on it’s
own then he’ll want some more

if you give a man a family
he’s going to become addicted
to being a father and husband
and find a satisfaction in life he
never knew. but then one night
he’ll be sharing a beer with a single
friend who owns a motorcycle
and he’ll begin thinking

i wonder what it would be like
to have independence?

this is interesting… like reading about a foreign territory. Your outlook on life is so different from mine,it is quite fascinating. Have you seen the movie unbreakable, well in that movie you would be Bruce Willis (the unbreakable dude), and I’d be Samuel L Jackson( the breakable one).Obviously, I am not declaring any murderous intention towards you (samuel did try to kill Bruce in the end—big spoiler if you haven’t seen the movie– it is no masterpiece anyhow), my point is that this piece here seems written from the point of view of an unbreakable, and essentially harmonistic person.
Personally, I am still pondering why people make babies (maybe it has something to do with trying to become the salt of the earth, the light of the world or simply the race must continue).
I am not a negative/pessimistic/cynical person, babies/children are cute, love, family all great but if given the chance/freedom and the motorcycle I will roam the world until I find a good place to stay clear of everyone.

    freaky.
first of all. – best comment ever.
but you’re right… its just different. i’m writing a paper for my masters dealio on happiness and different views of it etc… what i’m reading is basically arguing that happiness is the fulfillment of some rational need or desire.

i would argue that you have 1 specific rational need that there is only one to satisfy and that everyone feels exactly like you do now (although generally they hide it better and you express it better) until they figure out how to fulfill that need.
and some people fulfill it with something that it wasn’t made to be fulfilled by, and they’re happy for a time, just to return to desperation…

i’m on 4-ish years of overwhelming joy… i can explain and all if you’d like. but like i said, its just one thing. and some folk just dont like it.
