the sieve and the sand

dessicated grass
sends up dust when mowed;
the heat wilts leaves.

Like a drop of rain,
eastward I flowed;
irresistible current.

in the grass
amid shards of glass:
amaranth.

a cold breeze
rustles new oak leaves:
from somewhere the scent of lilacs.

sky suddenly darkening,
wind bending branches–
i wait for the rain.

in the courtyard, a tree,
heavy with blossoms–
a light rain begins.

over your shoulder,
in the latticed window:
the first shock of forsythia.

some days lunch just tastes

so much better and you eat
